Dual Citizenship Croatia

CITIZENSHIP BY BIRTH

The following categories of people acquire citizenship at birth:

• those born to a Croatian father and a Croatian mother;
• those born in the Republic of Croatia to at least one Croatian parent;
• those born abroad to at least one Croatian parent and registered as a Croatian citizen by age 18;
• those born abroad to at least one Croatian parent who would otherwise be left stateless;
• those born abroad to at least one Croatian parent and the other parent is stateless or citizenship is unknown;
• those born or found on the territory of the Republic of Croatia if both parents are unknown or both parents' citizenships are unknown or stateless.

CITIZENSHIP BY DESCENT

The following categories of people acquire citizenship by descent:

• those born to a Croatian father and a Croatian mother;
• those born in the Republic of Croatia to at least one Croatian parent;
• those born abroad to at least one Croatian parent and registered as a Croatian citizen by age 18;
• those born abroad to at least one Croatian parent who would otherwise be left stateless;
• those born abroad to at least one Croatian parent and the other parent is stateless or citizenship is unknown.

CITIZENSHIP BY NATURALIZATION

Those meeting the following requirements may apply for naturalization:

• age 18 or older;
• foreign citizenship has been revoked or will be revoked once Croatian citizenship is acquired;
• at least 8 years of residence on the territory of the Republic of Croatia;
• proficient in the Croatian language and Latin script;
• attachment to the Croatian legal system and customs and acceptance of the Croatian culture.

Those married to a Croatian spouse and who are permanent residents in the Republic of Croatia may apply for naturalization without meeting the above requirements.

Those whose admission to Croatian citizenship would be of interest for the Republic of Croatia may acquire Croatian citizenship by naturalization without meeting the above requirements.

CITIZENSHIP BY MARRIAGE

Those married to a Croatian spouse and who are permanent residents in the Republic of Croatia may apply for naturalization without meeting the typical requirements for (non-marriage) naturalization.

CITIZENSHIP BY ADOPTION

Those adopted by Croatian citizens acquire citizenship and are deemed to be a Croatian citizen from the moment of birth.
