Who is Eligible for Colombian Citizenship by Birth?

placeholder

Anyone born to at least one Colombian parent, regardless of the place of birth, is entitled to Colombian citizenship. If you or your child were born outside of Colombia, you can register the birth at the nearest Colombian Consulate.

We receive many inquiries about how to obtain Colombian citizenship from people whose parents were born in Colombia and who live in the United States. If this is the case for you, you can obtain Colombian citizenship by registering at the closest Colombian Consulate.

You will need the original and a photocopy of:

  • Your original birth certificate.
  • Your Colombian parent’s original birth certificate.
  • Your ID.
  • Your Colombian parent’s ID.
  • Blood test.

Once you have your documents together, you’ll need to schedule an in-person appointment at a Colombian Consulate. Visit the consular directory to find the one closest to you.
